An online fundraiser has been set up for the Evan Hardy Collegiate teacher injured when a student was set on fire at the Saskatoon high school on Thursday.
A 14-year-old student appeared in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Friday charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and arson after the 15-year-old girl was set ablaze.
At the time police said a teacher was sent to hospital as he tried to help the victim. It is not known what injuries he sustained.
In a post on GoFundMe on Sunday, Allie Cameron said she was a friend and colleague of teacher Sean Hayes and that he “went above and beyond to save a student’s life,” while putting his own safety at risk.
Cameron said Hayes had demonstrated extraordinary courage and selflessness, and his heroic actions were “nothing short of extraordinary and embody the very best of what it means to be an educator”.
The fundraiser, which has a $10,000 goal was sitting at nearly $4,000 on Sunday afternoon. Money collected will go toward “any medical expenses, counselling services and other costs”.
Cameron said the campaign aims to ease the financial burden on Hayes, allowing him to focus on his recovery and “continue his positive impact” on the lives of his students.
A GoFundMe campaign for the 15-year-old victim of the horrific attack set up by her cousin had reached more than $55,000 on Sunday, far surpassing its $25,000 goal. Those funds will go to helping the victim’s parents pay for travel from Saskatoon to Edmonton, where she is in hospital, and other expenses.
