After months of searching, the City of Saskatoon has identified a possible sight for what it’s calling a new, temporary, “enhanced” emergency shelter.
According to a statement, the site at 210 Pacific Avenue in downtown Saskatoon, is the former Saskatchewan Transportation Company building. It’s owned by the city, which may lease it to the provincial government at a below-market rate.
The city said the site should meet most of the criteria set out by city council, but would need about $250,000 in renovations to include showers, bathrooms and a kitchen.
There would be room for 30 to 40 beds, some private rooms, space for staff, and meets council requirements to be at least 250 metres away from any elementary school.
“The province will also provide operational funding for shelter services,” the statement read.
The province has confirmed during previous emergency shelter searches, that The Mustard Seed would operate whichever site is chosen.
City council will have to decide whether to give the goahead for an 18-month lease at its Sept. 25 meeting.
If approved, the shelter would likely open sometime before the end of the year.
Neighbourhood information sessions will be held on Sept. 16 with representatives from the city, province and The Mustard Seed.
“Area residents and business will be invited to attend to learn about shelter operations as well as plans for safety and security around the facility,” the statement continued.
According to the city, the search for a longer term solution for an emergency shelter will also continue.
