The Government of Saskatchewan is investing $1.92 million in Trades and Skills centers in Regina and Saskatoon.
The money is earmarked for continued skills training program delivery and administration at the centres, which provide short-term in-demand trades and skills programs. The experienced gained at the center helps facilitate entry level jobs for students.
Immigration and Career Training Minister Jeremy Harrison spoke at the Saskatoon Trades and Skills Centre today to emphasize why this investment is so important.
“Probably the biggest challenge we are facing as a province economically is a skilled labour shortage,” Harrison said.
“What we need to make sure we have is a labour force to actually realize on the opportunities that are being created.”
Harrison said the investment would help bring major projects to Saskatchewan, which in turn will boost the province’s economy.
“That really means making sure training opportunities exist, that they’re relevant to the jobs that are being created.”
Harrison said the centers have a great success rate.
“Well over 80 per cent of the graduates from the program here are finding work almost immediately.”
Harrison said the government will continue to make investments to help make stronger communities and opportunities for Saskatchewan.
