A 32-year-old man is facing robbery charges after police say he threatened a gas station employee with a bat on Thursday in a series of events where a man was also seriously injured.
Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) said in a news release that events began when an off-duty officer on his way to work saw the injured man in the area of 31st Street West and Idylwyld Drive North around 6 a.m. on Aug. 22 and stopped to help.
SPS said the injured man was taken to hospital with serious injuries and police determined that he had been robbed and injured at an address in the 1000 block of Idylwyld Drive North. Police then arrested three people at that address.
While one of the men arrested was being held in detention, he began acting erratically, damaging SPS property and threatening self-harm, police said. That man was taken to hospital for assessment and later released after being charged with mischief.
Around 1:30 p.m. the same day, police received reports of a man armed with a bat in the 1100 block of Idylwyld Drive North, followed by a report of an armed robbery at a nearby gas station.
Police said a man matching the description of the suspect being investigated for the earlier assault had entered the gas station, damaged a display case, and threatened a staff member with the bat before leaving with an undisclosed amount of money. The gas station employee was not physically injured.
Officers then went to an address in the 1000 block of Idylwyld Drive North and arrested the man, who was also found to be in possession of methamphetamine. Police did not say if this was the same address where they determined the earlier robbery took place.
A 32-year-old Saskatoon man has been charged with robbery, possession of a controlled substance, and failure to comply with court-imposed conditions.
SPS said officers are continuing to investigate the earlier assault and subsequent events. No further information was provided.
