A coroner’s inquest will work to determine the facts around the 2021 death of an inmate at the Saskatoon Provincial Correctional Centre.
According to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice, 33-year-old Daniel Evans was found “in a low level of consciousness” inside his cell at the correctional centre on September 2, 2021. Paramedics were called, and he was taken to St. Paul’s Hospital where he was put onto life support.

“His condition continued to deteriorate, and life support was terminated on September 14, 2021,” the ministry explained in a statement. “He was pronounced deceased at 02:09 hours on September 15, 2021.”
Under Saskatchewan’s laws, the chief coroner is required to hold an inquest into the death of any inmate at a jail or correctional facility “unless the coroner is satisfied that the person’s death was due entirely to natural causes and was not preventable.”
The inquest’s jury will work to determine the time, place, cause and manner of Evans’ death. The jury can then make recommendations in order to prevent similar deaths in the future.
The inquest will run from Sept. 16 to 20 at the Travelodge on Circle Drive West in Saskatoon, with coroner Timothy Hawryluk presiding.
