Saskatoon police have released the latest crime statistics for the second quarter of 2024, and they are telling.
This year has been one for the books so far, with Saskatoon having 11 homicides before June 30. These homicides have all taken place on the west side of the South Saskatchewan River based on information provided by the Saskatoon Police Service in their most recent report. The homicide victims ranged in age from one year to 66.
Here are the homicides of 2024 for Saskatoon so far:
Homicide #1 – Feb. 3:
The case began on Feb. 3 in Saskatoon’s Pacific Heights neighbourhood. Officers were called to a home on Lisgar Avenue for a report of an aggravated assault. When they arrived, they found a 25-year-old Alberta man dead.
A 34-year-old man and 32-year-old woman are facing charges of first-degree murder in connection with the death.
Homicide #2 – Feb.10:
A 48-year-old man was shot to death on a Saturday morning in Saskatoon’s Caswell Hill neighbourhood.
In the 200 block of Avenue K North officers found the victim, who had succumbed to a gunshot wound. Police identified a 21-year-old Saskatoon man as the suspect and he was subsequently arrested. Both were known to each other.
Homicide #3 – Feb. 17:
According to police, a 48-year-old man was killed on Feb. 17 at a home on Avenue I South. The victim, suffering from a gunshot wound, was rushed to hospital where he died shortly after his arrival. A 36-year-old man, 34-year-old man and a 37-year-old man were all arrested.
Homicide #4 – Feb. 19
The death of a 35-year-old Saskatoon man is being treated as the city’s fourth homicide of 2024. Officers were called to 20th Street West on a Sunday afternoon for a report of a stabbing. A 24-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder.
Homicide #5 – Feb. 19
A 12-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy have been charged with manslaughter in the death of another 12-year-old boy in Saskatoon. The two boys also were charged with four weapons-related offences. Police didn’t say what types of weapons were involved. The incident took place on the 1000 block of Matheson Drive in the Massey Place neighbourhood.
Homicide #6 – March 9
In the 100 block of Avenue T South, a 1-year-old boy died according to police.
A 42-year-old woman was charged with one count of Criminal Negligence Causing Death.
Homicide #7 – April 15
Saskatoon police said Melissa Duquette, 24, was found dead on April 15 in the basement of a house in the 3200 block of 33rd Street West in the Dundonald neighbourhood.
A 33-year-old man, a 28-year-old man and a 23-year-old man were charged with First-Degree Murder.
Homicide #8 – April 15
A 25-year-old man is dead after a shooting in Saskatoon’s Pleasant Hill neighbourhood.
Homicide #9 – April 16
The Saskatoon Police are investigating the death of an aggravated assault victim.
A 30-year-old man was taken to hospital on April 15 with life-threatening injuries. Later that week, he succumbed to those injuries.
Homicide #10 – June 3
Two 29-year-old men are facing criminal charges in connection with Glen Lennie’s killing, police said. In the 800 block of 22nd Street West at around 3 a.m., Police found 29-year-old Lennie with life-threatening stab wounds. He was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Homicide #11 – June 12
Harvey Zoerb, a 66-year-old man was killed in the early morning hours of June 12 near Fairhaven Elementary School. He loved to walk, was a cancer survivor, and enjoyed music.
