It was a low-key night out for four women in Saskatoon before one roll on a slot machine would change their lives.
The group was at Rock Creek Woodsmoke Grill & Bar in Stonebridge on Thursday night when they took home a $1,449,418.33 prize.
It was a buzzer-beater win, with the willing roll would take place around 11:30 p.m., 30 minutes before the slot machines are turned off for the night.
The volume of the group’s excitement was what made restaurant manager Makenna Mascho realize someone just won a lot of money.
“I was in the back and I could hear extreme excitement and yelling,” said Mascho.
“I was like, that’s not the excitement of someone winning like $1000 or something .. the excitement out there was ‘I think someone just won the 1.4 out there’.”
Mascho said the group of women plan to split the money four ways.
The restaurant can pay out $2,500 on site but the remainder will have to come from Saskatchewan Lotteries.
“After that $2,500 there is another ticket that is processed which is given to the guests and they take it to the lottery office, and then the lottery office pays them out the rest of the amount of money.”
Mascho said she has never seen anyone win a cash prize that big before.
“We’ve done lots of payouts of $2,000, $3,000 .. but nothing of this size.”
