Operation Safe Driver Week led to 235 tickets, 12 suspensions

A total of 235 tickets were issued in the province during Operation Safe Driver Week by the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol (SHP).

The tickets were issued for “speeding, unregistered vehicles, seatbelts, failing to stop at a stop sign, suspension from driving, overweight commercial vehicles and cargo securement violations,” according to Saskatchewan Government.

In addition, 12 roadside suspensions were issued for drug and alcohol usage.

“We want every single person to make it home safely, and Operation Safe Driver Week is a key part of teaching drivers how to look out for themselves and each other on the road,” said Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Minister Paul Merriman.

The initiative took place between July 7 to the 13 and included a total of 344 drivers.

The campaign which was launched in 2007, is North American-wide coordinated by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance.

Part of the campaign included 238 commercial vehicle inspections. Forty percent were removed from the roads and 17 percent needed attention, according to SHP.

“We need everyone to do their part on the roads to ensure we can all arrive at our destinations safely,” said Provincial CVSA Coordinator SHP Sergeant Mathew Austin.

The operation is a partnership with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, law enforcement and industry.
