The City of Saskatoon has activated its level two extreme heat emergency response plan.
As the weekend rolls in, Saskatchewan is expected to see temperatures higher than 32 degrees. Cooling stations and water distribution sites are being set up throughout the city to help those without coverage from the heat.
Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can cause severe health impacts and potentially death.
The City of Saskatoon encourages anyone experiencing heat-related health issues to call 911.
“Residents can help those most vulnerable to this extreme and prolonged heat by checking on family, friends and neighbors, sharing the list of cool-down locations and by alerting emergency services if they see someone in distress due to the extreme heat.”
Saskatoon’s extreme heat emergency response plan will be active until Tuesday, July 23rd. During this time, spray pad hours will be extended to 10:00 p.m.
Pet owners are encouraged to keep their furry friends indoors with plenty of water to drink. If pets are showing signs of distress, contact a local veterinarian.
Anyone working outside may want to consider bringing extra water and taking longer breaks from the sun.
The City of Saskatoon also reminded its residents about the Transit Safe Bus program.
“Saskatoon Transit offers the Safe Bus Program, designed to assist anyone, of any age, that needs immediate shelter or needs to contact emergency services. If you need help, simply and safely flag down a bus or go to a parked bus. Transit operators can contact emergency services directly through the on-bus radio system and will give the person in need a safe place to wait.”
