Swift Current promises to rename itself if Taylor Swift returns to Sask.

It started with an idea, mused about on the air, and now it has become it’s own hashtag.

Z99 morning show host Wheels wondered, could there be a way to get Taylor Swift back to Saskatchewan?

Swift has made four previous appearances in Saskatchewan, including stops in Saskatoon, Regina and Craven. The singer was last in the province when she hosted the Canadian Country Music Association Awards in Saskatoon in 2012.

With her Eras Tour selling out around the world and ending this December, Wheels and his Z99 co-host Cassity, decided the best option was to remind Swift what she said in a Tweet in 2009, that after her visit she likes to shorten the name to “Saskatch.”

Now, a movement has begun. The two created a video to encourage the province to get Swift #BacktoSaskatch and convince the star to return.

The Regina duo even travelled to the Swift Current to convince officials in the city to jump on board.

In a news release Thursday, Swift Current’s Deputy Mayor Ryan Switzer and MLA Everett Hindley announced that if Swift comes back to Saskatchewan, Swift Current will rename itself to “Taylor Swift Current,” “Swifty Current,” or some other name connection in honour of her time in the province.

They hope other towns and cities in the province will join in the fun.

“With her absence in the province coming up on 15 years a grassroots movement has been started asking Saskatchewan’s cities and residents to band together to help ‘invite’ her #BacktoSaskatch,” the release stated.
