The 56th annual Majestics Car Show rolled into town this weekend.
Larry Smith has been coming to the show since he was a little boy. He has a really unique bike in the show.
“It’s a 1978 Harley Davidson Ironhead,” he said. “It’s basically an original bike from the 70s. I actually put a rear differential on it to make it three wheels instead of two. I’ve been riding it for a lot of years now.”
What makes his bike extra special, is the decorations he has around the bike. He changes the decor for every show or parade he’s in.
“It’s just something that fell into place,” Smith said.
“The kids seem to like it. I do the Duck Derby parade out in Lumsden. I dress up as a duck and there’s a duck riding in the back and I throw candies out to the kids. I’ll be doing the toy run in Regina this year. I’ll be dressed as the Grinch and I’ll have Santa Claus tied up in the back of the buggy. I’ll have the little dog Max hanging on the back too.”His bike and decorations have seen great success.
“I’ve had it in parades and other car shows,” he said. “I won actually six awards with it right from last year up until now. It’s been good!”
He won first place with his bike last year and is hoping for another win this year.
He’s been passionate about bikes and cars all his life. After he retired, to fill up his free time he works on cars and motorcycles.
Laurie and Kelly Wiens from Moose Jaw made their own Herbie from the iconic movie ‘Love Bug’.
“It’s a 1966 Volkswagen,” Kelly said. “But Herbie was actually around a 1963 Volkswagen. But its the same body style as this.”
The pair are from Moose Jaw. They met in high school and shared a love for cars.
“Laurie had a Volkswagen back then,” said Kelly. “That was her original car so later on in life we decided to get another one. We went to a Volkswagen show in Vancouver and on the way back we stopped in Drumheller because we saw an ad for this car. We ended up purchasing it. But it wasn’t a Herbie at that time. Later on, we went to a show in Brandon, Manitoba. As we were towing it on the way home, we stopped to get gas and a little boy walked out and said, ‘That almost looks like a Herbie.’ So that kind of set a light off in our heads and we turned it Herbie from there.”
The process of recreating the iconic car was easy for the couple.
“We put the sticker package on,” Laurie said. “Sharp Signs in Regina put that sticker package on. We changed the wheels and put the taping on the headlights. Other than that it’s basically the sticker package.”
The two have been coming to the show for years, but this is their first time entering a car into the show. They are joined by two other members of their Prairie Volks group.
“We love all the beautiful cars,” said Laurie. “We’re car people so we try to go to a lot of shows, whether we put a vehicle in or whether we look at everyone’s beautiful rides.”
They just can’t get enough.
“It’s been awesome so far,” Kelly said. “We’ve had a chance to go around probably half of the show and it’s hard to get through them all because there’s so many nice vehicles to look at.”
Laurie said there’s something for everyone at the car show.
“It’s a lot of fun and very enjoyable for everyone,” she said.
“There’s a lot of smiles on people’s faces. There’s a big selection of vehicles.”
