Large Palestinian flags waved in the skies of downtown Saskatoon on Saturday afternoon.
Nearly 200 people came out to show their support for Palestine.
Ashley Shingoose organized a prayer ceremony before the protest started.
Shingoose said it was really important to her to organize the event.
“I always felt that it was a really sticky situation to say healing,” said Shingoose. “Because that kind of gives the imagination that the trauma is over.”
Shingoose explained that gathering in a ceremony meant a lot to her.
“We’ve done the marches, we’ve hung out on eighth street,” said Shingoose. “I needed something more fulfilling for my spirit and I needed to show up for Palestinians the way my ancestors would’ve wanted me to.”
Shingoose hopes that more people in Saskatoon will begin to show support for Palestine.
“So many people in Saskatoon don’t care,” said Shingoose. “(They) want us to shut up just for caring, just for showing up.”
The ceremony happened an hour before the protest started. Shingoose said it was important to not be tied to the political side of the protest.
As the rally in Saskatoon wrapped peacefully, pro-Palestinian protests continued at major US universities Saturday. According to CNN, several schools called authorities to remove demonstrators.
Earlier this month, pro-Palestinian protestors were arrested for blocking railroad tracks in Regina.
