A Regina police officer was taken to hospital early Friday after they were shot when another officer’s gun went off accidentally.
Police said the incident happened at around 12:15 a.m., when the Street Gang Unit — assisted by the Tactical Support Unit — executed a search warrant at a house in the 1000 block of Retallack Street.
“During this search warrant execution there was an accidental discharge of a police officer’s firearm, which struck another police officer,” police said in a release. “This officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital.”
Police said no civilians were hurt in the incident.
The release didn’t provide any other details, including the severity of the officer’s injuries.
The police service’s Major Crimes Unit is probing the shooting, and the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team is monitoring that investigation.
SIRT was formed to investigate incidents where a person has died or suffered a serious injury during interactions with on- and off-duty police officers or while in police custody. It also is to examine allegations of sexual assault or interpersonal violence involving police.
