Saskatchewan anglers can fish for free over the Family Day weekend.
From Saturday through Monday, anyone can fish in the province’s public waters without needing to buy a licence. Angling limits and other sport-fishing laws and requirements remain in effect, however.
Christine Tell, Saskatchewan’s environment minister, said it’s a great chance for families to spend time together.
“Free Fishing Weekend is an excellent time to try winter fishing for the first time, or for experienced anglers to bring friends and family and show them the ropes — or reels, in this case,” Tell said in a statement.
But while many anglers may be heading out on the ice over the long weekend, the ministry reminded everyone to keep safety in mind, especially considering the warm weather the province has seen in recent weeks. More information on ice safety can be found on the ministry’s website.
The free weekend doesn’t apply inside national parks, the ministry noted.
