Regina’s Mark McMorris had the lead after the first run of the men’s snowboard slopestyle at X Games Aspen, but he couldn’t hold on to the title of king of the mountain.
American Red Gerard overtook McMorris on the second run and held on to win gold Sunday at the Buttermilk Ski Resort in Aspen, Colorado.
The silver was McMorris’ 23rd in X Games competition, extending his record. He has won 11 gold, nine silver and three bronze medals since 2011.
His total includes seven gold, five silver and two bronze medals in slopestyle and four gold, four silver and one bronze in big air. McMorris didn’t compete in the big air competition this year.
The 30-year-old from Regina was the last rider in each round of the 10-man slopestyle competition Sunday.
In the first round, Gerard was in first place with a run of 93.66 points until McMorris put up a 95.33 to take over top spot.
Gerard reclaimed first place with a score of 96.33 on his second run, while McMorris fell on his second attempt.
After the American put up a 97.00 on his final run, McMorris could manage only a 96.00 on the last run of the event.
Norway’s Mons Roisland finished third.
