The Saskatchewan Roughriders will be bringing back Mason Fine for two more seasons.
The CFL club announced Tuesday that the 26-year-old quarterback had signed a two-year contract extension. Fine could have become a free agent on Feb. 13.
The Peggs, Okla., product started four games for the Riders in 2023 after Trevor Harris suffered a season-ending knee injury on July 15 against the Calgary Stampeders. Fine came on in relief of Harris in that game, throwing for 122 yards and two touchdowns.
The 5-foot-11, 190-pound pivot completed 94 passes for 1,043 yards with three touchdowns and five interceptions during the season. He suffered a hamstring injury on Aug. 11 against the Montreal Alouettes.
After he came back from the injury, he was the team’s primary backup behind Jake Dolegala, who had become the starter.
Fine signed with the Riders in December of 2020 and has dressed for 32 games for the club. In his first three seasons, Fine has thrown for 1,797 yards with six touchdowns and eight interceptions.
Fine starred at the University of North Texas with the Mean Green. He sits 28th all-time in passing yards in college football history.
He also owns several UNT school records; he was his school’s all-time leader in passing yards (12,505), passing touchdowns (93), passer efficiency (140.68), overall touchdowns (100), completions (1,039), pass attempts (1,655) and 300-yard passing games (18).
Fine was named the CUSA Offensive Player of the Year twice (2017-18) and twice was named first-team All-CUSA (2017-18).
The Riders have 20 possible free agents left.
