Prince Albert residents watched the city’s first A&W restaurant go up in smoke and flames Wednesday morning.
The fire broke out shortly after 5 a.m. causing significant damage.
An update from the Prince Albert Fire Department indicated the blaze started in the kitchen. Firefighters were forced to change tactics when the flames spread to the attic and then the roof.
“Firefighters retreated from the structure and began a defensive attack from the exterior,” said a news release. “The fire while under control and not endangering neighbouring properties, continues to burn.”

The vintage A&W has been a fixture in the city’s downtown since the late 60s when car hop servers would bring food to a customer’s vehicle.
The incident is not considered suspicious at this time and there were no injuries reported.
The public is being told to avoid the area of 12th Street and 1st Avenue West, as fire crews and police are working in the area, and water runoff has made roads extremely icy.
