A Saturday morning fire has caused Balgonie’s Greenall High School to shut down the school for Monday.
In a media release, the Prairie Valley School Division said the majority of the structural damage was confined to the construction and carpentry lab, where the fire is believed to have started.
The release said no one was injured, however, there is residual smoke and soot in other areas of the school.
“While clean-up activities are underway, Greenall High School will be closed on Monday, January 15, 2024 to all students and staff,” the release stated.
“With the provincial teachers’ withdrawal of service on Tuesday, this means that classes are tentatively scheduled to resume at Greenall on Wednesday, January 17, 2024. The school and Education Centre will communicate confirmation to students and families when more information is known no later than Tuesday, January 16, 2024.”
The fire was responded to by members of the Balgonie Fire Department.
According to the release, it is unknown when the Practical and Applied Arts shop will be reopened.
“Staff will work to minimize the impact on student learning in those programming areas,” the release said.
