A 23-year-old woman who was on remand at Pine Grove Correctional Centre near Prince Albert has died, the province said Thursday in a news release.
Family members confirmed to paNOW that the woman is Tatianna Custer. Court records show she had pending charges in both Prince Albert and Saskatoon.
According to the Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety, Custer was found unresponsive in a common area at Pine Grove just before 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Staff started lifesaving measures and called EMS, who took Custer to Victoria Hospital, where she was pronounced dead just after 2 p.m.
Custer was the spouse of Drexlr Whitehead, who was killed in a homicide in Prince Albert in 2021. She’s survived by a young son.
The release from the government said foul play isn’t suspected at this time.
Prince Albert police will be investigating, and the ministry will conduct an internal investigation.
By law, in-custody deaths are also subject to a coroner’s inquest, with dates set by the coroner’s office.
