Canada was able to fend off a tough German team Sunday, pulling away in the third period for a 6-3 win at the IIHF world junior hockey championship.
The win will see Canada (3-0-1-0) finish second in Group A behind Sweden (3-0-1-0). The hosts lost 5-4 to Finland in overtime earlier in the day but had beaten Canada 2-0 on Friday.
Canada will take on Czechia (2-0-1-1) in a quarterfinal Tuesday. Puck drop is set for 7 a.m. It’s a rematch of last year’s gold-medal game, which Canada won 3-2 in overtime.
Germany struck first in Sunday’s showdown in Gothenburg, Sweden, with forward Julian Lutz scoring on the power play just 2:57 into the game.
Forward Macklin Celebrini, who led Canada with six points coming into the game, scored first for Canada to tie things up in the opening frame. Saskatoon-born forward Brayden Yager of the Moose Jaw Warriors also scored on the power play in the first.
Germany scored the equalizer in the second period, with Roman Kechter putting the puck past Canadian goaltender Mathis Rousseau.
Canada showed its strength in the third with goals from Owen Beck, Jordan Dumais, Celebrini and Easton Cowan. Germany’s lone third-period goal came from the stick of Julius Sumpf.
The Canadian squad features three players with ties to Saskatchewan — Yager, Warriors defenceman Denton Mateychuk and Saskatoon Blades forward Fraser Minten — and has a fourth waiting in the wings.
Canada added Warriors forward Jagger Firkus to its roster after Matt Savoie suffered an injury. Firkus went to Canada’s training camp, but was returned to Moose Jaw before being recalled on Saturday.
