Macklin Celebrini had his coming-out party Wednesday at the 2024 world junior hockey championship in Gothenburg, Sweden.
In just his second career game at the under-20 tournament, Celebrini — the projected first pick overall in the 2024 NHL draft — had a goal and four assists in Canada’s 10-0 victory over Latvia.
The 17-year-old product of North Vancouver, B.C., who plays college hockey at Boston University, also had a goal in Tuesday’s 5-2 win over Finland.
Saskatchewan was well-represented on the scoresheet Wednesday as Canada — the tournament’s two-time defending champion — improved to 2-0-0 in the 2024 event.
Saskatoon-born Brayden Yager of the WHL’s Moose Jaw Warriors had a goal and an assist, Warriors defenceman Denton Mateychuk had two assists, and Saskatoon Blades forward Fraser Minten scored one goal and set up another.
Conor Geekie and Carson Rehkopf each added two goals for Canada, which got a goal and two assists from Matthew Wood. Owen Allard and Matt Poitras had the other goals for the Canadians, who got at least one point from 14 of their 20 skaters.
Mathis Rousseau made 22 saves for the shutout. Latvia starting goalie Linards Feldbergs allowed seven goals on 31 shots before giving way to Aksels Ozols in the third period. Ozols gave up three goals on 10 shots.
The Canadians have the day off Thursday before facing Sweden on Friday.
