The University of Saskatchewan Huskies’ season ended Saturday in Edmonton.
The University of Alberta Golden Bears rode a 34-point first half to a 40-17 victory over the Huskies in a Canada West football semifinal.
Alberta moves on to face the UBC Thunderbirds in the Hardy Cup next Saturday in Vancouver. UBC advanced with a 29-21 victory over the visiting Manitoba Bisons on Saturday.
It’s the Golden Bears’ first appearance in the conference final since 2010, and they’re seeking their first Canada West title since 1981. The T-Birds, who are in the final for a second straight season, haven’t won the conference championship since 2015.
In Edmonton, the Golden Bears led 11-7 after the first quarter before Saskatchewan cut the deficit to 11-10 with a David Solie field goal. But Alberta scored the final 23 points of the quarter to take a 34-10 lead into halftime.
Golden Bears quarterback Eli Hetlinger finished the game with 279 yards passing and four touchdowns. He threw nine- and 10-yard scoring passes to Kolby Hurford, a 75-yarder to Carter Kettyle and a 69-yarder to Jonathan Rosery.
Kettyle caught six passes for 136 yards for the Golden Bears.
Jonathan Giustini added three field goals, four converts and a single for Alberta, which also recorded a safety.
Ryker Frank scored on 14- and one-yard runs for the Huskies, who got two converts and a field goal from Solie.
Huskies quarterback Anton Amundrud completed 27 of 43 pass attempts for 320 yards, but threw three interceptions. Frank rushed for 61 yards on 13 carries, while Rhett Vavra was the Huskies’ leading receiver with 116 yards on six catches.
