The WHL has mandated the use of neck guards in the wake of the death of Adam Johnson.
The former NHLer died on the weekend after his neck was cut by a skate blade during a game in England.
In a media release late Wednesday afternoon, the league announced all players would have to wear neck guards starting Friday or as soon as the clubs got the equipment.
“All WHL players will be required to wear protective neck guard equipment at all times while participating in on-ice activities, including WHL games and practices,” the league said in the release.
“The WHL anticipates challenges in delivery of protective neck guard equipment from licensed suppliers due to increased demand following the tragic passing of Adam Johnson.”
Neck guards are mandatory in the Ontario Hockey League and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, which join the WHL under the umbrella of the Canadian Hockey League.
The SJHL also was said to be pondering the mandatory use of the neck protection for its players.
