An alleged case of armed extortion on the Sturgeon Lake First Nation has led to two arrests, but two other people are still wanted.
According to the RCMP, officers got a report of gunfire on the First Nation on Sept. 19. Sturgeon Lake First Nation is about 50 kilometres northwest of Prince Albert.
“After further investigation, it was determined that several individuals assaulted and attempted to extort an adult male, who was taken to hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening in nature,” the RCMP said in a statement.
Police didn’t initially say if the victim was shot, and just noted that a firearm was discharged and a person was injured, but on Wednesday an RCMP spokesperson confirmed the victim was shot.
Two suspects – 41-year-old Ian Felix of Prince Albert and 22-year-old Savannah Burns of Sturgeon Lake First Nation – were arrested on Wednesday after police followed a reportedly stolen vehicle to a home on the First Nation. At the home, police also seized eight guns and ammunition, along with the vehicle.
The RCMP said Burns is charged with extortion with a firearm, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, uttering threats, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
Felix is facing the same list of charges, along with careless use of a firearm, possession of stolen property, driving while prohibited, possession of a firearm with a tampered serial number, and other weapons charges.
Police said two other suspects are wanted in connection with the extortion case.
Jared Naytowhow, 32, and Brianna Forest, 24, both residents of Prince Albert, are facing the same list of charges as Burns, with Naytowhow also facing a single count of pointing a firearm and other gun charges.
Naytowhow was described as being 5-foot-10 and about 200 pounds with brown eyes and brown hair. Forest was described as 5-foot-7 with brown eyes and brown hair.
“If you see Jared Naytowhow or Brianna Forest – do not approach,” the RCMP said in a statement.
“Report information on their whereabouts to your local RCMP detachment at 310-RCMP.”
