The Saskatchewan RCMP’s Roving Traffic Unit made a major drug bust on Highway 16 this summer.
On June 1, the unit was helping with an Alberta RCMP investigation and stopped a vehicle with two men inside near Maidstone. Inside the vehicle, police said officers found four large bags containing 90 kilograms of methamphetamine and 65 kilograms of cocaine.
According to police, the combined value of the drugs seized was about $4,000,000. The drugs were tested for purity, police said, with the meth coming back with ratings as high as 100 per cent, while the cocaine tests found purity levels as high as 86 per cent.
“This significant seizure will disrupt the supply of illicit, lethal drugs destined for distribution across Canada, particularly Saskatchewan,” the RCMP said in a statement.
Two Edmonton men, 19-year-old Sahilpreet Grewal and 20-year-old Parminder Singh, were arrested and charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking on June 2, police noted.
Both are set to appear in court in Lloydminster on Monday.
Despite the seizure occurring June 1 and charges being laid the following day, police did not announce it until Friday.
“Due to the complexity of the ongoing investigation since June, 2023, we were only now able to share details and some images of the seized items,” an RCMP spokesperson said in an email to 650 CKOM.
Rhonda Blackmore, commanding officer of the Saskatchewan RCMP, issued a statement celebrating the seizure.
“We are incredibly proud of the work of our RCMP officers. It’s the sheer dedication and hard work from units – like our Roving Traffic Unit in this instance – that ensures dangerous drugs are taken off the streets – reaffirming our top priority of keeping the public safe,” Blackmore said.
“This is also another great example of how the RCMP’s work is not limited by our borders and we can pull resources from all provinces to get the job done.”
