The human remains found near North Battleford last week have been identified as those of a 20-year-old woman who went missing in August, and police are calling her death suspicious.
The RCMP said in a media release Wednesday the remains are those of 20-year-old Nitanas Scarlett, who was reported missing to Battlefords RCMP on Aug. 7.
The Mounties got a call Sept. 11 that a body had been found in a wooded area southeast of North Battleford. Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes started investigating and, with the help of the Saskatchewan Coroners Service, identified the remains as those of Scarlett.
Her family has been notified of her death.
“Major Crimes continue to work diligently to determine the circumstances leading to Nitanas’s death, which investigators have determined is suspicious in nature,” the RCMP said in a release.
The Mounties said Scarlett was last seen on a street in North Battleford on July 4. She was reported missing more than a month later.
The release didn’t include any other details, including the cause of death or if police had any suspects.
Anyone with information about Scarlett’s whereabouts in July, or details about her death, was asked to call Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes at 639-625-4535 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
