Two men are facing charges after two separate incidents in which Saskatoon police officers allegedly were assaulted.
According to a police release, the first incident happened Saturday at about 6:30 p.m., after officers responded to a domestic disturbance in the 1100 block of McKercher Drive.
Police said officers arrested a 28-year-old man for assault, but he refused to enter the police vehicle and allegedly struck an officer. After being taken to cells, the man “continued being combative with officers,” police said.
The release said the man was believed to be under the influence of an intoxicant.
He’s facing two assault charges, with one of them being against a police officer. The release said the officer who was struck suffered minor injuries.
The second incident happened Saturday at about 9:30 p.m.
Police said officers were called to a domestic disturbance inside a vehicle near Circle Drive and Venture Crescent. The release said a 21-year-old passenger “had become combative with the driver, causing him to pull over and call police.”
Officers at the scene talked to the passenger and suspected he was under the influence of an intoxicant. Police said he was arrested under the Mental Health Act but, upon his arrest, allegedly started fighting with officers.
“The suspect kicked, bit and spit on officers, while attempting to disarm one of them,” the release said. “One officer was transported to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.”
The man was charged with assaulting a police officer and disarming a police officer.
It’s the third time in less than a week that a person was charged after a physical altercation with a Saskatoon police officer.
On Wednesday, a 38-year-old man was charged after a struggle with an officer as the member of the police service’s Bike Unit responded to a call in the 100 block of Avenue D North.
