The Saskatoon airport experienced an unwelcome arrival early Tuesday.
According to police, a stolen vehicle crashed through a fence at the airport and roared across one of the runways before crashing through a second fence.
In a release, police said the incident began Tuesday just after 12:30 a.m., when officers saw a vehicle that was known to be stolen being driven in the 400 block of Montreal Avenue South. They tried to pull over the vehicle, but the driver took off and drove into oncoming traffic.
That’s where the airport comes in.
“Officers observed the vehicle drive through a fence adjacent to Airport Drive and travel onto a tarmac before driving through a second fence, striking a light standard on 51st Street and finally coming to a stop in the 3500 block of Idylwyld Drive,” police said in a release. “The two occupants fled on foot but were arrested by a canine unit a short time later.”
Police said the 22-year-old woman who was a passenger in the vehicle had a loaded rifle magazine in her possession when she was arrested. A search of the vehicle turned up more ammunition.
The release said the woman and a 27-year-old man both were charged with evading police, dangerous driving, mischief over $5,000, possession of stolen property over $5,000, endangering the safety of aircraft, possession of prohibited ammunition, and breach of court-imposed conditions.
The woman also faces a charge of possession of a prohibited weapon.
