There’s no question that the staple of any fair is the food and what unique food combinations are decided upon.
Steve Ford is a cook and he has multiple food trucks at the Saskatoon Ex this year.
Ford is running the Steve-O’s Sweets and Treats as well as Steve-O’s Homestyle Fried Chicken and both places have some fun menu items.
Steve-O’s Sweets and Treats features a dish that is deep-fried banana balls, which Ford said came from just experimenting.
“Over the winter I was testing stuff with my kids. They really like banana bread, so we thought, ‘Let’s try this,’ so basically it was my kids’ idea,” said Ford.
It doesn’t stop at just deep-fried bananas for Ford.
“At Steve-O’s Homestyle Fried Chicken, we have a flaming hot Cheeto chicken poutine,” said Ford, who’s in his 11th year at the Ex.
Ford said most of his ideas come from experimenting over the winter with his family.
After all this food talk, I decided to go out and try some fun food combinations.
The first food I tried was a Kool-Aid burger from Chicky’s Chicken. The burger has a chicken patty covered in red sauce and it’s topped with lettuce and a pink sauce that sort of looks like melted bubblegum.
It didn’t really taste like Kool-Aid but it had a nice sweet-and-sour taste to it.
After trying the Kool-Aid burger, I made my way to Steve-O’s Sweets and Treats to try the deep-fried bananas. After the banana was put into a dish, chocolate sauce was drizzled over it with some powdered sugar.
It tasted almost like banana bread with a nice sweetness from the chocolate sauce and powdered sugar.
Next up was the grilled chicken intestine, which came on a stick in a cup with pickled onion juice. The non-juiced-up part of the intestine wasn’t bad, but I definitely won’t be trying it again.
To wash that all down, I tried a cotton candy slushie, which was one of the best things I had.
After the day, I’ve learned there’s nothing wrong with boring food options.
