There’s still a mystery surrounding a 1966 Saskatchewan Roughriders Grey Cup ring up for sale in Las Vegas.
The ring, which the sellers claim belonged “to one of the All Time Top-10 players in CFL history,” is being offered for sale for more than $71,000 at the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop, made famous by the TV series “Pawn Stars.”
The name of the player who the ring was awarded to isn’t being publicly shared by the pawn shop, however.
On Thursday, the families of George Reed and Ron Lancaster – who are both considered to be among the best CFL players of all time – confirmed to 650 CKOM that the ring up for auction isn’t Reed’s or Lancaster’s, as both families are still in possession of their ‘66 Grey Cup rings.
Reed confirmed the news personally, while Marc Mueller – one of Lancaster’s grandsons and a coach with the Calgary Stampeders – confirmed through Calgary’s communications team that his family is still in possession of Lancaster’s ring.
In a phone call with the pawn shop, a store employee said they couldn’t reveal the name of the original owner because the ring was sold to the shop in a private sale. Because of that fact, they said the store could not comment further in order to respect the privacy of the family.
They said the name will only be revealed to those considered serious buyers who are in direct negotiations with the pawn shop.
The shop also has Roughrider Grey Cup rings from 1989 and 2013 on offer.
