The owner of a Saskatchewan tavern said he’s blown away after his vision for a town full of dinosaurs roared to life on Canada Day.
Gary Grady owns Big Mur’s Tavern in Dundurn.
He said about 1,000 people registered to show up on July 1 in town wearing inflatable dinosaur costumes, in an effort to try and break the world record for most people in those costumes in one place. The previous record stood at 380, set in Portland, Oregon in 2022.
Grady said he was only expecting about 500 people to show up, but the turnout ended up being more than twice that.
“Every piece of asphalt in Dundurn had a dinosaur on it,” he said.
The official count at 5 p.m. recorded 1,163 dinosaur-costumed participants.
Despite the July heat, Grady said the dinosaur participants were able to stay pretty cool throughout the day.
He said the crowd didn’t even mind the weekend’s wild weather.
“The rain came in and just gave everyone a little cool down,” he said.
The free drink and burger promised to every participant in a dinosaur costume on Saturday, courtesy of Big Mur’s, helped keep people fed, hydrated and spirits lifted.
Grady said his stock of burgers held through the day, but his wife Sharon had to drive into Saskatoon twice to replenish their ice stock.
