Firefighters respond to blaze at encampment under University Bridge

Firefighters in Saskatoon are working to extinguish a fire that broke out at an encampment under the University Bridge.

According to the Saskatoon Fire Department, the fire was first reported shortly before 1 a.m.

“Upon arrival, fire crews identified an abandoned encampment on fire under the bridge,” the fire department said in a statement.

“The fire is under control but a timeline of when the fire will be fully extinguished is not known at this time.”

The location is difficult to access, the fire department noted, but a ladder truck and tanker truck are both being used to quell the fire.

“Motorists and pedestrians are asked to avoid the area directly under the University Bridge at this time while crews remain on scene,” the fire department added.
