The Saskatchewan RCMP’s Roving Traffic Unit and Saskatchewan Highway Patrol have done more than just nab bad drivers in recent weeks.
According to an RCMP media release, the RTU and Highway Patrol seized drugs, a gun and cash during three recent traffic stops in the Maidstone area.
On May 3, the RTU pulled over a vehicle. A search of the vehicle found around 10 kilograms of cocaine that subsequent testing determined had purity levels as high as 98 per cent.
“This seizure will disrupt the supply of illicit, lethal drugs destined for distribution across Canada, particularly Saskatchewan,” the RCMP said.
A 32-year-old Edmonton man was charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
On May 30, police stopped and searched a vehicle. Officers found about six litres of GHB, which could have resulted in 1,200 individual doses. Police also found a small amount of cocaine and methamphetamine.
A 40-year-old man from Langham and a 42-year-old man from Saskatoon are facing charges of possession of GHB for the purpose of trafficking and possession of cocaine. The Saskatoon man also is charged with possession of methamphetamine.
And on May 31, officers pulled over a vehicle that had what police called “a large amount of bundled Canadian currency” in plain view.
“Upon further investigation, several more bundles of vacuum-sealed Canadian currency were located, totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars,” the release said. “Police also located a restricted firearm, with two magazines that both contained ammunition, and a large amount of methamphetamine.”
A 46-year-old Edmonton man is facing a number of weapons charges as well as possession of meth for the purpose of trafficking and laundering the proceeds of crime.
“I am incredibly proud of the work that is being done across the province by our officers and partners at Saskatchewan Highway Patrol,” Supt. Grant St. Germaine, the officer in charge of Saskatchewan RCMP Traffic Services, said in the release.
“By taking all of these illicit items off the road and out of criminals’ hands, it demonstrates our commitment to keeping the public out of harm’s way.”
