C95 has named Natasha Fox as Teacher of the Year for 2023.
Fox was a teacher at École St. Matthew School who was described as a devoted mother and decorated wrestler. Fox, 33, was killed in a collision with a cement truck while riding her bike in Saskatoon last month.
A $10,000 donation was made to the Natasha Fox Legacy Fund as part of the award.
Fox’s husband, Tod Fox, tried to describe what the award meant to his family and their two children.
“Of course it made sense as soon as we heard,” he said. “She did go that extra mile, and loved all of her students and her kids.
“It’s recognition to everything she put her life towards, which is the kids and helping others,” Fox added. “We could not be more proud of her accomplishments, especially now.”
The Natasha Fox Legacy Fund’s goal is to create a memorial at École St. Matthew School in her honour. Funds will also be used to create a legacy in her name to help other wrestlers chase their dreams.
Fox was a competitive wrestler and her father, Doug Kramble, said the sport meant a lot to her.
“She started a program for very young kids to get kids into wrestling, and she was getting hundreds of kids into sport early on and letting them feel that success and that they could do it,” Kramble said.
John McGettigan, president of the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Association, said he hopes the award can remind people about the person Natasha was.
“I’ve never encountered another teacher that’s had a bigger reach than this young lady,” McGettigan said.
“We can’t change what’s happened. It’s been a tragedy and loss for these little kids, her family and loved ones, but we wanted to try and do something good out of this tragedy, and I think we did that.”
As the award was presented to the Fox family on Thursday, the sun peeked out on what was otherwise a cloudy day.
“It was a very touching moment,” McGettigan said. “The light is in the eyes of these children, and we hope they won’t forget this young lady, and I’m sure they won’t.”
