A second NDP MLA has decided not to run in the 2024 Saskatchewan election.
Jennifer Bowes, the MLA for Saskatoon University, joins Cumberland MLA Doyle Vermette as two NDP incumbents who aren’t seeking re-election.
The party currently holds 12 seats in the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly.
“It has been a great honour to serve the people of Saskatoon University,” Bowes, who was first elected in 2020, said in a media release. “I want to sincerely thank my constituents for placing their trust in me and for allowing me the incredible privilege of advocating on their behalf.
“While I have made the decision not to run for re-election after considerable deliberation and with mixed emotions, I look forward to continuing to serve the remainder of my term. I will continue to devote my remaining time as the MLA for Saskatoon University pushing for a just and equitable province for all Saskatchewan people. And then I’ll look forward to a new set of adventures with my wonderful partner.”
The NDP also announced its other 10 incumbents would be running for re-election in 2024, and the dates for 16 nomination meetings.
It also said it will be nominating candidates over the next week in the Lumsden-Morse and Regina Walsh Acres ridings, where byelections must be held in the coming months. The party already has selected a candidate for the Regina Coronation Park byelection.
