More stormy weather is expected to hit Saskatchewan on Sunday.
Shortly after 4 p.m., Environment Canada put out severe thunderstorm warnings for areas around Choiceland and Cumberland House. Those warnings were later changed to watches. Then, shortly after 7:30 p.m., new severe thunderstorm warnings went into effect for the areas around Candle Lake and Narrow Hills Provincial Parks, as well as Montreal Lake and Molanosa.
Just after noon, Environment Canada issued severe thunderstorm watches for areas across the province. Those advisories followed heat warnings that were put in place early Sunday morning.
The watches cover areas in the south, east and central regions of the province.
“Some of these thunderstorms will become severe, with large hail, strong wind gusts, and heavy rainfall,” the watches said. “There is also the slight risk of a tornado with one or two of these storms.”
Environment Canada meteorologist Shannon Moodie said earlier Sunday that the office had seen a Facebook report about a tornado that briefly touched down Saturday near Neptune, a community southwest of Weyburn.
There were tornado warnings issued Saturday for areas around Lafleche and Gravelbourg, while severe thunderstorm warnings and watches were in place throughout the day across the province.
Those storms followed others that hammered regions of southern Saskatchewan on Thursday and Friday. Those thunderstorms left streets and basements flooded in Regina.
“The storms that we’ve been experiencing, it’s just been so much rain,” Moodie said, “and it just seems to be day after day of that situation.”
