The remains found in the landfill of a Saskatchewan First Nation in April have been identified as those of a man who had been missing for nearly 10 years.
According to the RCMP, 38-year-old Randy Wallace George was reported missing from the Big Island Lake Cree Territory on July 11, 2013.
On April 27, the Mounties said remains had been found in the territory’s landfill. Police said a forensic autopsy conducted later that month determined the remains belonged to an adult man who had been dead for approximately 10 years.
The RCMP said investigators then compared those details to missing person files from that area and time. They came up with one potential match, and contacted family members to conduct a familial DNA comparison.
That work was completed this month, and the RCMP said the DNA evidence confirmed the body was that of George.
His death is not believed to be suspicious in nature, the RCMP said.
“Whenever a person is reported missing to Saskatchewan RCMP, we remain committed to locating them and bringing them home, regardless of the time that has passed,” the RCMP said in a statement.
