Flowers are being left at the intersection of Wiggins Avenue and College Drive, where 33-year-old Natasha Fox was killed in a collision with a cement truck while cycling on Wednesday afternoon.
Fox was a teacher at École St. Matthew School. She was also an accomplished athlete, wrestling for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, being named an RBC Olympian in 2016 and placing first in her weight class at the 2016 Canadian wrestling championships.
In a statement, Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools said the division was saddened to learn that a friend and colleague passed away while cycling as a result of a motor vehicle accident.
A neighbour who lives close to the scene said she could tell something was wrong when she was on her way home from work Wednesday.
“I’ve never heard the street so silent,” said Allie, who lives close to the scene of the collision. “There was lots of police tape and I saw the truck, and then underneath it, attached to the bike, she had a baby stroller.”
Police said two children were following Fox on their own bikes at the time of the accident, but neither was hurt. Police said the children were taken from the scene by a person known to them, and confirmed nobody was in the stroller at the time of the collision.
Huskie Athletics also shared a post expressing sorrow at Fox’s death, saying she was “an incredible athlete” and an important part of the school’s wrestling community.
This isn’t the first time an incident like this happened in the area. In February, a pedestrian was hit by a bus at the intersection of Cumberland Avenue and College Drive, leading to serious injuries.
Huskie Athletics is deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Natasha Fox (Kramble).
