For the second time in four months, the so-called “grandparent scam” has popped up in Saskatoon.
Three men were arrested in January after police said several seniors in the city were defrauded of more than $100,000. Now, the Saskatoon Police Service says a 20-year-old Ontario man has also been arrested after a similar incident in the city.
The scam involves a person – usually a senior – getting a phone call from someone claiming to be a family member who requires money for an emergency. The scammer often connects the victim with someone pretending to a lawyer, doctor or police officer who supports the scammer’s claim.
According to a release Thursday, police got a call Monday that a man had gone to the victim’s home and defrauded them of several thousand dollars.
Police said investigators identified a person of interest and, thanks to a tip from the public, found the suspect at a hotel in the 400 block of 20th Street East and charged him with fraud over $5,000.
“As a result of evidence seized upon his arrest and a subsequent search warrant executed at the hotel, investigators believe there may be additional victims both locally and in other communities that have not yet reported to police,” the police release said.
“This investigation is ongoing and it is possible that additional charges may be laid.”
Anyone who has received a suspicious call and suspects fraud but hasn’t been victimized should contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Anyone who has been the victim of fraud should contact their local police or the Saskatoon Police Service at 306-975-8300.
