The Battlefords North Stars got back to their winning ways Monday at the Centennial Cup.
The champions of the SJHL beat the host Portage Terriers 3-2 to improve to 2-1-0 at the Canadian junior A hockey championship tournament in Portage la Prairie, Man.
Battlefords opened the tournament with a 4-1 victory over the Kam River Fighting Walleye on Thursday before falling 3-1 to the Collingwood Blues on Saturday.
The North Stars and Terriers are tied for first place in Group B with six points each, with two victories apiece in regulation time. The AJHL’s Brooks Bandits lead Group A with a 3-0-0 record and nine points.
Steven Kesslering, Bradley Blake and Jake Southgate scored for the North Stars in Monday’s contest. Matt Wisener and Tayem Gislason replied for the Terriers.
The North Stars’ Josh Kotai stopped 35 shots, one more than Portage’s Bailey Monteith.
Battlefords returns to action Tuesday evening against the MJHL’s Steinbach Pistons (1-1-1). It’s the North Stars’ final preliminary-round game.
The playoff round is to begin Friday, with the final set for Sunday.
