Moose Jaw’s search for a new city manager is over.
Mayor Clive Tolley announced Wednesday that longtime resident Maryse Carmichael will officially take the job starting May 16. She’ll be the first woman to hold the job in Moose Jaw.
Previous city manager Jim Puffalt announced his retirement in the fall.
“We looked all over the country for the right candidate and here we found the right candidate right here in the city of Moose Jaw,” Tolley said.
Carmichael is a member of the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame. She’s also the first woman to be a pilot with the Canadian Armed Forces Snowbirds air demonstration team and the first woman to be the team’s commanding officer.
“City council and our directors and our employees, we’re all looking forward to working with her in a team environment to try and promote and grow our city. We think that her strengths align with the values of Moose Javians and with the values of our city employees,” Tolley said.
Carmichael has spent a total of about 19 years in Moose Jaw.
She said that while she was aware of the opening, she wasn’t closely following the search until a few weeks ago, as she was working with the manufacturer of simulation technologies, CAE.
“I am quite motivated and I look forward to the next few weeks,” said Carmichael, who hails originally from Quebec City.
She says the city has changed a lot from when she arrived in 1993.
“The city has grown, (there’s) lots of tourists (and) lots of new industries looking at the economic impact of the city,” she said.
“And I think that’s where I want to focus on in a few different areas —to attract different businesses but also just to ensure that the city and all Moose Javians feel like it is the best possible place for them to live and to raise their family and work.”
