The Saskatchewan RCMP Historical Case Unit is investigating after human remains were found in the Big Island Lake Cree Nation landfill.
In a media release Thursday, the Mounties said officers from the Pierceland detachment got a call last Friday that a body had been found in the dump. The officers secured the remains and then searched the area for clues, but didn’t find anything.
An autopsy was done Monday and the Mounties’ release said the autopsy “eliminated recent missing persons from the area.”
The release didn’t say if the remains were those of a male or a female, nor did it include an estimated age of the person.
The RCMP said the Historical Case Unit will work with the Missing Person Co-ordinator, Saskatchewan Coroners Office, Pierceland RCMP, Big Island Lake Cree Nation, National Centre for Missing Persons and Human Remains, and families of missing persons in hopes of identifying the remains.
Anyone with information that could help the investigation was asked to call the Pierceland RCMP at 306-839-3330, their local police service, or Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
The Big Island Lake Cree Nation is about 250 kilometres northwest of North Battleford.
