A former teacher in Maple Creek is facing charges of sexual assault and sexual interference dating back to the early 2000s.
According to the RCMP, 64-year-old Dexter Bacsu of Maple Creek was arrested after police were informed about a “historic sexual assault” on Tuesday. He appeared in a Swift Current courtroom Wednesday morning.
Police said the assault against a male youth allegedly happened during a sport-related trip in the early 2000s. The RCMP did not specify when or where the trip occurred.
“Maple Creek RCMP believe there may be more victims,” the Mounties said in a statement.
Because of the potential that others may have been harmed, the RCMP released some information on Bacsu’s employment history.
“Dexter Bacsu was a long-time teacher in Maple Creek schools and continued to work as a substitute teacher until recently. Chinook School Division has advised he is no longer an employee. Dexter Bacsu volunteers in local youth sports and music programming, including as a coach and trip chaperone,” the RCMP said.
While this allegation dates back two decades, police said sexual assault complaints will always be treated with the utmost professionalism and care.
“A complaint for sexual offences can be made at any time, no matter how far back the incident happened,” the RCMP said.
Anyone who may be a victim or have information about the case was urged to contact the Maple Creek RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.
