A manslaughter charge in a Saskatoon nightclub death has been stayed.
Paige Theriault-Fisher, 22, was charged after an altercation at Lit Nightclub in downtown Saskatoon last November left a 23-year-old woman dead.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety, for a prosecution to move forward it must have a reasonable likelihood of conviction and be in the public interest.
The ministry said the evidence included several cell phone videos that corroborated witness statements about a fight between Fisher and Hodan Hashi. No weapons were used by either of them during the fight, the ministry added.
“During the fight, the two women went to the ground and, tragically, Hodan Hashi was cut by a broken glass lying on the floor. Based on the evidence, that cut was the fatal injury that caused Ms. Hashi’s death,” read the statement.
Public Prosecutions concluded that Hashi’s death was an accident and that there was no reasonable likelihood of conviction for the manslaughter, or any other criminal charge, the ministry noted.
A written stay of proceedings has been filed with the courts.
The Crown said the decision not to move forward with the criminal charge didn’t lessen the tragedy or the seriousness of what occurred.
