Saskatoon police arrested a 34-year-old man who allegedly stole a vehicle at knifepoint, crashed, and then unsuccessfully tried to steal two more vehicles.
According to police, officers were called to a robbery in progress on Thursday afternoon in the area of 110th Street West. Police said the victim told them a man armed with a knife had stolen his vehicle and drove off.
While police were on their way to that call, other reports came in with complaints about an erratic driver in the area.
“Further reports indicated a vehicle, matching the description of the stolen vehicle, had collided with multiple parked cars near the intersection of 20th Street East and 2nd Avenue South,” police said in a statement. “The suspect had reportedly fled from the vehicle after this collision.”
Police said the alleged robber twice tried to steal other vehicles from female victims – the first time on 1st Avenue South and the second on Idylwyld Drive South – but both of his attempts were unsuccessful.
“After threatening a male victim in the area, the suspect began to flee once again, and was reported to have discarded a large knife into a storm drain,” police said.
Police said officers caught up with the suspect soon after, and he was arrested without any further incident. Nobody was hurt, police added, and the knife was also recovered.
According to police, the 34-year-old man is now facing charges of robbery, attempted robbery, assault with a weapon, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, dangerous driving, possession of methamphetamine and failure to stop after an accident.
