An eight-year-old boy from the Red Earth Cree Nation is dead after he was struck by a school bus moments after the same bus dropped him off.
According to the RCMP, the bus stopped to let the boy out shortly after noon on Wednesday.
“The child exited the bus and began travelling on foot in the same direction as the bus. The child was then struck by the bus,” the RCMP said in a statement.
Police and paramedics provided first aid, the RCMP said, but the boy was declared dead at the scene.
“His family has been notified and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time,” the Mounties added.
The bus driver remained at the scene after the boy was hit, the RCMP said, and no charges have been laid.
Nobody else was injured, and the case remains under RCMP investigation.
