Two overdose deaths in the past two days have prompted a new warning about illicit drugs from the Punnichy RCMP.
In a media release Wednesday, the Mounties urged people to learn the signs of an overdose and know what to do if someone is experiencing one.
“Punnichy RCMP have responded to a number of suspected overdoses in our detachment area in the past month. This includes two deaths in the past two days,” Staff Sgt. Curtis Pelzer of the Punnichy RCMP said in the release.
“We need the public to recognize there are dangerous illicit drugs present in our community, including fentanyl – only a few grains of which are enough to kill or seriously harm you. Knowing that, ask yourself: Do you know what an overdose looks like and what you should do if someone is having one?”
The Mounties’ release said the Punnichy detachment isn’t the only one dealing with a recent spate of overdoses; it noted there have been a number of suspected overdoses around the province in the past month.
The RCMP reminded people of the signs and symptoms of an overdose, including: Slow, weak or no breathing; blue lips or nails; dizziness and confusion; choking, gurgling or snoring sounds; and drowsiness or difficulty staying awake.
If someone is displaying those signs, the RCMP urged people to call 911 immediately so that first responders can use naloxone to counteract the effects of an opioid overdose. People who are witnessing an overdose and call 911 have legal protection under The Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act.
The Mounties also suggested people should get their own naloxone kits from these locations or from participating pharmacies. As well, the provincial government offers take-home fentanyl and benzodiazepine drug-checking strips that can be picked up at many locations across Saskatchewan.
Anyone who has information about drug trafficking in their area was asked to call their local detachment by calling 310-RCMP or Crime Stoppers at 1‐800‐222‐8477.
