Police in Saskatoon have launched a new program aimed at helping with evidence collection and crime prevention.
Starting Thursday, individuals or businesses can register their security cameras with the police service, and those who do so may be contacted by police to request footage if a crime is being investigated in the area.
“It is up to you if you provide any footage to the SPS and you are under no obligation to do so,” police said in a statement.
“Ideally, you won’t be contacted at all, however you may be if an incident occurs in your neighbourhood and police believe your security cameras may have recorded something relevant to an investigation.”
If footage has been requested and the owner is willing to provide it, police asked for the files to be saved to a USB drive and delivered to the police service centre, but an officer could also be dispatched to assist in the collection.
Privacy and personal information will be protected in accordance with legislation, police added.
Security camera footage has been important to several cases in Saskatoon. On Wednesday, police released footage of three persons of interest in a suspicious death case and asked the public to help identify them.
