The Saskatoon Blades were able to buck the Swift Current Broncos and are hoping this will be the beginning of a new winning streak to close out the season.
Saskatoon walked away with a 3-2 WHL victory on the road Wednesday night despite a comeback attempt from the Broncos — putting a damper on the Broncos’ playoff hopes.
Swift Current opened the scoring when Josh Davies beat Austin Elliott for his 18th goal of the season.
But the Blades battled back and scored three unanswered goals.
Trevor Wong got the goal-scoring party started when he finished a two-on-one with Josh Pillar.
Defenceman Aidan De La Gorgendiere gave the Blades the lead after a seeing-eye wrist shot from the boards found the back of the net.
Then Tanner Molendyk gave Saskatoon a two-goal cushion after being left in front of the net alone with just six seconds left in the second period.
That goal came in handy as Josh Filmon scored on a backhand in the third to cut the Blades’ lead to one.
The Broncos didn’t have a third Josh in their hand as those were the only goals they could muster on the night.
Elliott made 29 saves for his 24th victory of the season, claiming the first star of the night. Wong earned the second star after a three-point night (one goal, two assists) and Filmon was the third star.
Next up for Saskatoon will be its final homestand of the season. The Blades welcome in the Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday before two games against the Regina Pats. Puck drop for Saturday’s game at SaskTel Centre is 7 p.m.
