A 33-year-old woman from the Onion Lake Cree Nation has been charged with concealing the body of a child — more than a year after the infant’s death.
According to an RCMP media release, officers from the Onion Lake detachment responded on Jan. 5, 2022 to a report of a sudden death of a child at a home on the Onion Lake Cree Nation, which is about 40 minutes north of Lloydminster.
The Mounties said the Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Unit worked alongside the Saskatchewan Coroners Service for months to investigate the circumstances and cause of the child’s death.
The RCMP said that after the investigation and consultations with the coroner and Crown, the woman was arrested March 7. She was released from custody on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in Lloydminster Provincial Court on April 19.
The Mounties said they weren’t able to provide further information since the file is now before the courts. As a result, it’s unknown how the child died, how the child’s body was concealed, or what the woman’s relationship was with the child.
